With over fifty secret base locations to choose from, you can decide where in Hoenn you build your secret base. The mere idea of a personally customizable area in a Pokémon game is entirely novel. I’m going to pretend that secret bases are brand-new and we’ll work from there. They’re not that interesting now, but I’m sure that in the long gone land of ’03, they were innovative. The first, and least, dynamic change is the aforementioned addition of secret bases.

Indeed, there weren’t terribly many changes made between the games, but most of the changes were huge. I thought this entire article would be about contests and secret bases. The story mode, though, can be pretty enjoyable for a single player. At first, I was hard-pressed to come up with differences between the second and third generations. To me, it works best as an all day nerd party, where a few close friends drive each other nuts for hours on end, having time to do all of the demeaning stuff to each other while downing junk food. It can be a short, sweet romp, or a massive knock down, drag out free-for-all that you can play for days on end, and how you choose to play can vastly change how you look at the game. There are tons of different ins and outs in Dokapon far more than I could describe without transcribing both the instructions and an FAQ. Beat on the same player for too long, though, and they may just go to the Dark Space and become a mighty Darkling, forfeiting their wealth for immense power. Player vs player combat is encouraged, and defeating an opponent allows you to affect them in several ways such as losing turns, stealing items, or just humiliating them by changing their name or changing their hairstyle to look like a giant turd. Kill boss monsters on towns, and they're yours at which to heal, invest, collect taxes, and even gain special locally produced items. You gain experience from fights, and you can level up, buy new equipment, change job classes, and even style your hair in RPG fashion. This probably sounds familiar to Pokémon Stadium players, because, well, it is. Battle uses a rock/paper/scissors model, where each action is strong against one choice and weak to another, and you can't select the same action 2 turns in a row. In their travels to complete the selected objective, players will encounter many events, such as random charcters showing up to offer services or gambling opportunities, town officials wanting to roshambo with you, and most often, battle.

This mode sets a smaller condition set such as liberating a specific town or reaching a specific asset value amount. There is normal mode, which challenges players to choose a pre-set time limit, and whoever has the most money/assets at the end wins, and finally, battle royale mode.

#DOKAPON KINGDOM DARKLING NORMAL SERIES#
There's a story mode, in which the king gives a series of objectives to complete, challenging players to save the kingdom and endeavor to have the most money at the end. It challenges players to roam the seven continents of Dokapon, fighting monsters and each other along the way to meeting the target conditions for victory. Dokapon Kingdom for the PS2, Wii, and DS (as Dokapon Journey) is a board game/RPG hybrid for up to four players that can be played in several different ways.
